Say Hello to Automated Garbage Collection
The City of Baton Rouge and the Parish of East Baton Rouge (excluding Baker and Zachary) use an automated/semi-automated garbage collection system, provided by the City-Parish and Allied Waste Services, Inc. This system is one of the most advanced in use today. This system offers the advantage of a quieter operation, reduction in wind-blown litter, and ability to roll the cart versus carrying garbage to the curb.
A ninety-six gallon cart is assigned to area residents. To use the cart, residents simply roll the cart to the curb on their assigned garbage days and place it in the correct position for pick-up. The automated truck will then come by, pick-up the cart with its robotic arm and empty the contents into the truck. The arm will then set the cart back in its original spot, ready for the resident to roll back in.
Keep It Clean, Keep It Green,
Cart Smart Baton Rouge!
Collections begin at 5 a.m. each day. To ensure service, carts should be set at the curb the night before. The cart lid must be closed; carts with lids propped open will not be serviced. Old “personal” type garbage cans are no longer serviced by the service contractor. Household garbage must be placed in a city owned cart, which has the city seal and serial number. Actual pick-up times may vary depending on routes, weather, traffic etc. The contract service runs until 8 p.m. so residents should be aware that actual pick up time could be as late as 8 p.m. Residents will be notified of any change in frequency or day of pick up.
Cart contents only will be collected for garbage. Bulky trash, such as old furniture, bagged yard waste, woody waste, mattresses, lumber, etc., should be placed in the unbundled trash pile for once-weekly collection. Old, empty garbage cans may be set out at the curb for disposal. Mark the can clearly with a large “X” and place it out with your trash for weekly collection. See Curbside Brochure.
In some areas, due to street or overhead clearance limitations, a standard truck will continue to service the residents, with a tipper attachment that will be used to empty the carts into the compaction compartment instead of a robotic arm. This type of collection is called semi-automated service.
Although each residential unit will initially be provided with a 96-gallon wheeled container, if more capacity is needed, one additional container may be purchased from the City-Parish at a cost of $60.00. Smaller containers will be provided
upon special request from citizens physically unable to handle the larger 96-gallon containers. Please allow
one to five business days. per cart delivery time. Residents should call 3-1-1 to request a container exchange or addition, or to report missed garbage, trash, or recycling collections.
Residents should call 3-1-1 for all garbage, trash and recycling related complaints and service issues.
