The City of Baton Rouge - Parish of East Baton Rouge has drafted a Sustainability Plan and strategy as part of a 2009 Recovery Act-Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) received from the U.S. Department of Energy. The Office of the Planning Commission completed the Sustainable Government Operations Plan (Sustainability Plan) in the Fall of 2011. The Sustainability Plan identifies specific goals and outcomes that reflect the principles set forth in the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement that Mayor-President Holden signed in the summer of 2005
The goal of the City-Parish government is to improve the efficiency and long term sustainability of our government operations, which can be accomplished through implementing and completing the action items listed in the Sustainability Plan. The Planning Commission collected data on energy use from all levels of the City-Parish government which included vehicle fuel costs and consumption, buildings' heating and cooling costs and energy intensity, the total miles traveled by the fleet, and the number of City-Parish employees walking, biking, car-pooling or using public transportation to get to work every day in order to write the plan and create recommendations.
