Nuclear

East Baton Rogue Parish resides in the 10 mile Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ) for the River Bend Nuclear Power Plant, located in St. Francisville, LA. The East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (MOHSEP, along with many other agencies, participate in an emergency exercise drill with River Bend Station every 2 years to ensure that the Parish is ready for a radiological/nuclear incident and/or release from the facility. East Baton Rogue Parish also resides within the 50 mile EPZ for the Grand Gulf Nuclear Facility in the western part of Mississippi.

If you live in an area that could be affected by an incident at either of the two nuclear facilities you will be alerted that an incident has occurred from sirens in your area.

When the sirens are sounded the Emergency Alert System will be activated and instructions given on how to respond as to whether or not they should take shelter or evacuate.
