|Under the direction of a Librarian of a higher classification, performs supervisory work as a staff specialist. A Librarian II has responsibility for a complex and special phase of library activity using acquired professional library techniques and procedures, as a section head at a large regional branch, as a branch manager for a community library, or as a specialist with a specific library skill. Incumbents of this class frequently provide general supervision to personnel of a lower classification. Direction is received from regional branch or division heads or higher administrative personnel. Work is reviewed through personal conferences, written reports and results obtained. Performs other work as requested. |
|ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS|
|Manages all supervisory and reporting functions at a community-sized library or a section of a regional branch library; serves as branch manager in the absence of a regional branch manager.
Manages all building maintenance at a community library.
Manages a division in the absence of a division head and a Librarian III; responsible for specific supervisory responsibilities within a large division.
Provides patron mediation and interprets library policy.
Plans and implements community outreach and programming.
Performs complex research and reference work in response to patrons' questions; oversees electronic reference.
Oversees all aspects of meeting room use in a community library.
Oversees special projects for a division or section; coordinates or oversees library collection inventory or other system-wide functions.|
|KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES|
|Knowledge of current principles, practices and procedures of professional library science.
Knowledge of library print and online reference and research materials and tools.
Knowledge of reader interest levels, books and authors.
Knowledge and skill in an online environment and standard office productivity applications.
Knowledge of clerical processes, procedures and records used in a large library system.
Knowledge of circulation policies and practices and integrated library systems.
Ability to resolve patron account problems.
Ability to supervise, train, plan, and direct the work of a moderate sized staff of professional, paraprofessional and clerical employees.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
Ability to make decisions recognizing established precedents, practices and systems, and to use resourcefulness, tact and courtesy in meeting new problems and in dealing with library staff and patrons.
Ability to use selected multimedia equipment.
Ability to push, lift, bend, and reach as needed for shelving, moving heavy boxes of books, tables for programs, etc.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.|
|EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE|
|Master's degree from an accredited school of library and information science and one year of experience in professional library work.|
|Equivalent higher education from an accredited school of library and information science may substitute for work experience.|
