|LOCATION OF WORK|
|Under the direction of the Chief of Detectives, performs responsible technical forensic analysis of evidence gathered at crime scenes submitted for criminalistics analysis. This classification is responsible for providing impartial scientific evidence for use in court of law to support the prosecution or defense in criminal and civil investigations. Work involves performing scientific examinations on drugs, toxicological samples, blood, trace evidence, and crime scene investigations. Work also involves testifying as an expert witness in court proceedings. Work is reviewed through periodic conferences or reports. Performs other work as requested.|
|ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS|
|Analyzes biological specimens with the use of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) analysis including isolation, identification and genetic characterization of body fluids.
Conducts database queries to compare CODIS DNA profiles in the Local DNA Indexing System (LDIS) in the State DNA Indexing System (SDIS) and in to the National DNA Indexing System (NDIS).
Extracts drugs and/or poison from blood, urine, or other body tissues and performs quantitative analyses.
Prepares blood alcohol proficiency samples and certifies analyses.
Prepares briefs of analyses of evidence and testifies as an expert witness in state and federal courts, gives depositions.
Collects and preserves evidence for future analysis.
Assists in reviewing database matches identified at the local, state and national levels.
Operates scientific equipment such as chromatographs, spectrometers, and microscopes; maintains cleanliness, safety, security and organization of laboratory and work area.
|KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES|
|Knowledge of modern DNA analysis techniques, temporal and geographical data collection and link analysis of data.
Knowledge of laboratory, principles, terminology, and equipment pertaining to analyzing substance suspected of containing an illegal or controlled substance.
Knowledge of applicable laws and regulatory codes relevant to analyzing illegal substances in a laboratory facility.
Knowledge of evidentiary procedures to ensure integrity of evidence at all times.
Skill in the operation and care of calculators, personal computers and other office machines used in connection with the preparation of DNA analysis.
Skill in the use and care of laboratory equipment.
Ability to analyze facts and evidence, arrive at logical conclusions and relate effectively in court proceedings.
Ability to define data requirements and research, gather and validate information.
Ability to evaluate implementation and effectiveness of research.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers and the general public.

|EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE|
|Bachelor's degree in chemistry, forensic science, biology, biochemistry, microbiology, toxicology or a related field with college coursework in biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology. |
|Employees of this class are required to complete training standards as set forth by the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab within one calendar year from the initial employment or employee will be terminated. Completing training within one calendar year is a requirement of employment; therefore the probationary period will end after the employee has completed training and six (6) months of employment.
Must have a valid Louisiana driver's license at the time of appointment and maintain throughout employment in this classification.
