GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under direction of a departmental supervisor, performs supervisory, skilled and complex work in the maintenance and repair of various types of large sizes of sewage treatment equipment. Work involves preventative maintenance and repair of wastewater treatment plant equipment; supervision of skilled support staff. An employee of this class may be on twenty-four hour call. Work is reviewed through written reports, personal conferences, and for results obtained. Performs other work as requested.
 
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Plans, directs, trains, and evaluates skilled mechanical support staff. Requisitions materials; maintains maintenance records; maintains inventory of supplies, parts, tools; completes reports. Troubleshoots problems with plant equipment. Responds to inquiries whether in person, by telephone, or by written correspondence; contacts vendors; coordinates with contractors. Performs preventative maintenance; performs repairs on equipment; maintains related tools and equipment; oversees clean work area. Works on and maintains various types of large sizes of sewage treatment equipment and pumps (e.g. grit and grit classifier, plunger, sump, sludge/scum, primary and plant effluent, recirculation, etc). Manage budget and balance accounts. Interview applicants for various positions of employment.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of electrical systems. Knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of machines and motors. Knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of instrumentation operations. Knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of preventative maintenance. Skill in the safe operation of a variety of power tools. Skill in the safe operation of a variety of hand tools. Skill in the safe operation of a light motor vehicle. Ability to work with close tolerances. Ability to make mechanical repairs. Ability to organize, supervise and inspect the work of mechanics and others engaged in treatment plant operations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to follow schematic drawings. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent certificate of competency, and four years journeyman level experience in mechanical repairs.
 
SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
Possession of a Class IV Wastewater Treatment Certificate as issued by the Louisiana State Department of Health. Must have a valid Louisiana driver's license at the time of appointment and maintain throughout employment in this classification. Position(s) of this classification may require a valid Louisiana Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class A, B, or C with appropriate endorsements. If license is required, must maintain throughout employment in this position.
