|Under the direction of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor, performs supervisory and technical work in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant. Work involves providing technical supervision and assistance to supervisors, operators, mechanics and laborers. Employees of this class may be required to work shift work, overtime, or be on twenty-four hour call. Work is performed with considerable latitude for independent judgment and reviewed through reports, conferences, and on-site observation. Performs other work as requested.|
|ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS|
|Assists the Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor in planning, organizing and supervising the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant.
Conducts inspections of equipment and facilities; takes appropriate action to ensure maximum operational efficiency of equipment; ensures that standards relating to sewage treatment are enforced.
Directs and participates in chemical tests; collects samples and analyzes effluent discharged into a river.
Reviews plant records, gauges, meters and other plant testing and measuring devices to see that equipment is functioning properly; reviews records and takes appropriate action; keeps records and prepares daily and monthly reports on plant operations; and orders supplies.
Schedules the work shifts of operating personnel and responds to emergency calls regarding plant equipment breakdowns.
Provides training to subordinate personnel as required.|
|KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES|
|Knowledge of the materials, methods, practices and equipment used in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant.
Knowledge of the theory and practice of modern wastewater treatment operations.
Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions for wastewater treatment plant work.
Knowledge of the preventive maintenance practices applicable to equipment operated.
Skill in interpreting the readings of test gauges and meters used in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant.
Ability to analyze operational problems and conditions and to take corrective action.
Ability to ensure that safety rules are enforced.
Ability to organize, supervise and inspect the work of treatment plant supervisors, operators, mechanics and others engaged in wastewater treatment plant operations and maintenance.
Ability to direct work in the repair and maintenance of plant equipment and facilities.
Ability to keep records and make reports.
Ability to communicate clearly, orally and in writing.
Ability to perform a variety of chemical tests and evaluate results.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, employees and the public.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.|
|EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE|
|High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, and four years of journeyman level experience in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant.|
|Any equivalent combination of education and experience.|
|Possession of a Class IV Wastewater Treatment Certificate as issued by the Louisiana State Department of Health.
Position(s) of this classification may require a valid Louisiana driver's license. If license is required, must be maintained throughout employment in this position.|
