|Under the supervision of an employee of a higher classification, performs responsible and skilled work in the operation of sewage plant equipment on an assigned shift. Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of a sewage treatment plant or pumping station on an assigned shift. Work requires technical knowledge and the use of independent judgment in operating the various kinds of equipment, which are used in the treatment of sewage. Employees of this class may be required to work shift work, overtime, or be on twenty-four hour call. Work is reviewed by a supervisor who checks records and charts and makes daily inspections through the plant to check the condition and upkeep of equipment. Performs other work as requested.|
|ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS|
|Pumps sludge from primary settling tanks into sludge boxes and into digesters; skims primary tanks; drains traps.
Prepares log sheets; changes charts and recording sheets on a switchboard; inspects motors, bearings and gear boxes for overheating and proper lubrication; checks temperatures on digester heaters; takes temperatures of sludge and effluent at various stages.
Collects samples of sewage and effluent at various stages of processing.
Maintains work area in a clean and orderly manner.
Installs or replaces equipment and machinery; participates in major plant installations and equipment overhauls.
Operates, repairs or maintains various types of machines or equipment.|
|KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES|
|Knowledge of the functions and servicing requirements of mechanical equipment and machinery.
Knowledge of the principles, practices, materials, and operating procedures related to the operation of a sewage treatment plant.
Knowledge of the processes involved in the purification of water or the treatment of sewage, including some practical understanding of chemistry.
Ability to operate a variety of plant pumping, treatment, and control equipment.
Ability to conduct standard sewage treatment tests and to maintain basic records of plant operations.
Ability to inspect machinery and mechanical equipment in operation and to detect flaws and defects in operation.
Ability to read meters and charts accurately and to maintain records of shift operation.
Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
Ability to work effectively with coworkers and the public.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.|
|EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE|
|High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, and one year of experience in the operation and maintenance of a sewage treatment plant.|
|Any equivalent combination of education and experience.|
