|Under the direction of a higher classification, performs journeyman level work in the maintenance, design, and installation of lock and key systems for City-Parish buildings. Work involves responsibility for performing a variety of skilled tasks related to the installation, maintenance and repair of locks and making keys. An employee in this class rebuilds lock cylinders, adjusts lock sets, cuts new keys and designs and modifies lock systems. Incumbents are responsible for maintaining master files of lock systems and keys in use. Performs other work as requested.|
|ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS|
|Sets or resets lock cylinders to provide a key system to ensure security of buildings or rooms; selects and specifies the lock systems to be used in new buildings; installs new locks or replaces an entire lock system.
Removes worn or pitted parts from locks, builds them up by welding and dresses them to exact size; repairs or replaces springs, tumblers, and other parts; changes lock combinations.
Selects key blanks, cuts keys, fits keys to locks; makes master keys; unlocks doors when keys are lost or broken in the lock, when locks are defective, or when combinations are unknown.
Maintains master lock and key records; orders supplies for key and lock repair work; maintains equipment inventory and cleans and repairs tools and equipment.
Opens safe locks by turning dial or by drilling through lock.
Prepares job estimates and recommends the purchase of needed materials.
Repairs pneumatic door closure devices.|
|KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES|
|Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and practices used in the locksmith trade.
Knowledge of the operation and methods of repairing all classes of locks.
Skill in opening defective locks and in making and fitting keys.
Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment common to the locksmith trade.
Ability to work independently and to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Ability to read blueprints of buildings.
Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with coworkers, superiors, and others.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.|
|EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE|
|High school diploma, GED, or equivalent certificate of competency, and successful completion of an apprenticeship or equivalent training program in the locksmith field.|
|Any equivalent combination of education and experience.|
|Position(s) of this classification may require a valid Louisiana driver's license. If license is required, must maintain throughout employment in this position.|
