|This classification has a special recruiting rate of step 6 (starting salary $33,873 annually) for new hires only.|
|Under the supervision of an employee of a higher classification, performs skilled and complex work in the maintenance and repair of various types of large sizes of sewage treatment equipment. Work involves performance of preventative maintenance and repair of pumps, gearboxes, conveyers and bar screens. Work also involves light electric work, laying pipes, rebuilding pumps, and welding. An employee of this class may be on twenty-four hour call. Work is reviewed for results obtained. Performs other work as requested.|
|ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS|
|Installs pumps; removes pumps; repacks pumps; rebuilds R.A.S. pumps.
Gets materials for a job; requests materials; makes gaskets.
Checks pumping stations; keeps work area clean; turns stations on and off for TV crew.
Does light electrical work; disconnects electric motors, checks voltage, amps.
Repairs bar screens, basins and basin drive units, sludge pumps, pumping stations.
Operates fork truck; operates storm water pumping station.
Works on and maintains various types of large sizes of sewage treatment equipment; maintains various types of pumps, i.e., grit and grit classifier, plunger, sump, sludge/scum, primary and plant effluent, recirculation, etc.|
|KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES|
|Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of electrical systems.
Knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of machines and motors.
Knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of preventative maintenance.
Skill in the safe operation of a variety of hand tools.
Skill in the safe operation of a light motor vehicle.
Ability to work with close tolerances.
Ability to make mechanical repairs.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Ability to follow schematic drawings.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.|
|EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE|
|High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, and one year of journeyman level experience in mechanical repairs.|
|Any equivalent combination of education and experience.|
|Must have a valid Louisiana driver's license at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment in this classification.|
|OTHER JOB ASPECTS|
|Plant Operations Series Exam required. Written examinations are available on most Tuesdays, 8:00 -8:30 am, check-in, Thursdays, *12:00 - 12:30 pm, and Fridays, (for current openings only) 8:00 -8:30 am check-in. Please call Human Resources Recruiting and Examination at 389-3132 to confirm testing dates and times. Test check-in is on a first come-first served basis. There are occasions where the test room is filled to capacity and applicants are asked to return on another day for testing.
*Where written exam volume is expected to be high, check-in of applicants will begin prior to noon in order to complete the check-in process prior to the required 12:30 cut-off time.
