Pest Control Inspector I
Work Location:EBR Parish Mosquito Abatement and Rodent Control District
Starting Salary:12.251 Hourly / $25,482 Annual
Pay Grade:1125
Under the general supervision of an employee of a higher classification, performs specialized field work in the control and/or eradication of mosquitoes, rodents and associated pests. Work involves locating mosquito and rodent infested areas, identifying subject pests, applying standard sampling techniques and collecting samples of unidentifiable pests. Work is performed independently and a considerable amount of public contact is required; additionally, incumbents may perform work under adverse physical conditions. Work is reviewed through direct observation and evaluation of results obtained. Performs other work as requested.
Locates, describes, inspects and treats areas to detect and/or to control the presence of noxious insects and other pests; marks infested area to determine effectiveness of control measures. Counts the number of mosquitoes in a given area, applying standard sampling techniques; checks mosquito light traps and rain gauges. Records results of counts onto field work sheet; collects samples of unidentifiable insects, adult and larvae of mosquitoes. Assists the Entomologists in conducting the encephalitis surveillance program and insecticide baseline studies; may take blood samples. Answers rodent and mosquito control service requests, inspects requested area, identifies rodent causing the problem and takes remedial action. Sets mechanical traps and distributes baits and poisons to exterminate or capture target area pests; informs area residents of actions they may take to alleviate the problem. Makes follow-up inspections; identifies rodent breeding areas; assists in initiating block wide sanitation programs; collects rodents for identification and blood tests.
Knowledge of the basic principles of elementary biology as related to mosquito and rodent control. Knowledge of the geography of East Baton Rouge Parish. Knowledge of mosquito and rodent control materials and methods and of standard sampling techniques. Knowledge of mosquito and rodent habits, fumigants, rodenticides and insecticides. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public. Ability to make elementary arithmetical calculations accurately. Ability to keep routine records and prepare reports. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, to groups and to individuals. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, including or supplemented by courses in elementary biology, and six months of experience in the control of household, field, or animal pests.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must have a valid Louisiana driver's license at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment in this classification.

Pest Control Series Exam required. Written examinations are available on most Tuesdays, 8:30 - 9:00 am, check-in, Thursdays, *12:00 - 12:30 pm, and Fridays, (for current openings only) 8:30 - 9:00 am check-in.Please call Human Resources Recruiting and Examination at 389-3132 to confirm testing dates and times. Test check-in is on a first come-first served basis. There are occasions where the test room is filled to capacity and applicants are asked to return on another day for testing. *Where written exam volume is expected to be high, check-in of applicants will begin prior to noon in order to complete the check-in process prior to the required 12:30 cut-off time.
