Starting Salary:15.488 Hourly / $32,215 Annual

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of a departmental supervisor, performs highly responsible sub-professional engineering and construction work. Work involves inspecting several public works construction projects and performing and/or leading the activities of engineering survey work. Incumbent exercises considerable independent judgment in developing work methods and procedures within the confines of City-Parish regulations and departmental policies. Work is reviewed through inspection, oral and written reports, and for results obtained. Performs other work as requested.
 
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Performs and/or acts as a lead worker for all types of surveys such as land, drainage, sewer and street; locates property and lot lines; summarizes and interprets field notes. Determines and gives grade elevations to construction crews for excavation of canals, roadside ditches, and storm drain culverts. Works with road lighting districts and annexations. Inspects construction projects on a continuous basis to ensure conformance with approved plans and applicable codes. Drives vehicle to and from various site locations. Supervises the setting of river gauges, benchmarks, etc. Assists with preparing engineering and construction plans and maps utilizing computer-aided design and drafting software. Uses computer to prepare reports.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of mathematics and trigonometry. Knowledge of principles, procedures, and practices of engineering. Knowledge of principles, procedures, and practices of surveying. Knowledge of the terminology, methods, practices, and techniques of engineering or architectural drafting. Knowledge of ordinances and regulations relative to City-Parish construction and demolition standards. Knowledge of engineering maps and records. Knowledge of materials, methods, and techniques applicable to large public and private street, sewer, utility, drainage, and building construction and demolition work. Skill in the safe operation of a light motor vehicle. Skill in the operation of modern survey equipment. Skill in the operation of modern office equipment such as computers, calculators, copiers, blueprint makers, microfilm readers and printers, and related peripherals. Skill in the use of Microsoft Office applications and ability to learn how to utilize CADD (Computer-Aided Design and Drafting) software. Ability to make complex engineering computations and to interpret field notes and construction plans. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and specifications applicable to large-scale public works construction projects. Ability to investigate and write reports on fundamental engineering problems concerning streets, drainage, and sewerage designs. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, contractors, property owners, and the public. Ability to lead the work of sub-professional engineering and/or clerical personnel. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, supplemented by vocational or trade school courses in drafting, and three years of sub-professional engineering/architectural/construction experience (such as drafting, surveying, inspecting, etc.).
 
SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
Must have a valid Louisiana driver's license at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment in this classification.

EXAMINATION
Engineering Aide III exam required. (may take up to 3 hours from test start time). Subject areas and other exam preparation information are available at http://brgov.com/dept/HR/ExamBreakdown.htm. Written examinations are available on most Tuesdays, 8:30 9:00 am, check-in, Thursdays, *12:00 - 12:30 pm, and Fridays, (for current openings only) 8:30 9:00 am check-in. Please call Human Resources Recruiting and Examination at 389-3132 to confirm testing dates and times. Test check-in is on a first come-first served basis. There are occasions where the test room is filled to capacity and applicants are asked to return on another day for testing. Picture identification, proof of social security number and a completed employment application are required for test room admittance. *Where written exam volume is expected to be high, check-in of applicants may begin as early as 11:30 am in order to complete the check-in process prior to the required 12:30 cut-off time.
