Head Start Center Supervisor
Work Location:Department of Human Development and Services
Starting Salary:12.7419 Hourly / $26,503 Annual

Under the administrative direction of the Program Administrator - Head Start, performs responsible professional administrative and supervisory work in directing the activities of a Head Start center. Work involves planning, organizing and supervising a staff engaged in the social, emotional, intellectual and psychological growth of preschool aged children. Employees of this class may also be assigned teaching responsibilities. Supervision is exercised over professional and sub-professional employees assigned to the center. Performs other work as requested.
Plans and organizes for the center staff, daily and weekly activities; ensures that the required arrangements are made to accomplish these activities. Conducts various meetings in the center, including weekly staff conferences and guidance meetings with staff members. Inspects equipment and facilities to ensure proper cleanliness and orderliness; reports repair requirements to the Coordinator. Requests and checks receipt of supplies and equipment, ensuring that proper administrative requirements are met. Receives enrollment applications from parents, and based on established guidelines and personal judgment, recommends which children should be accepted. Instructs and supervises children in all activities including proper use of restroom, personal hygiene, mealtimes and nap periods. Assists parents/volunteers in planning advisory meetings and activities. Schedules home visits as required for the child's total development. Arranges food service as specified by nutrition consultant. Plans field trips and submits request to the Director. Ensures that visitors to the center are properly received and assisted, including giving information and making referrals when warranted. Coordinates with other agency and non-agency personnel when necessary to obtain assistance to achieve center goals and objectives. Ensures that children are on the proper bus and that the bus is properly supervised.
Knowledge of day care center administrative policies and procedures. Knowledge and understanding of the developmental levels of preschool aged children. Knowledge in the motivational techniques used in total child development. Ability to teach, supervise and relate to preschool aged children both individually and in groups. Ability to establish control and provide proper discipline when necessary. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public contacted in the course of work. Ability to instruct and teach others the skills and practices of childhood learning. Ability to carry out supplementary responsibilities related to the children's programs. Ability to direct the activities of professional and sub-professional employees engaged in instructing preschool aged children. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
Associate's degree or higher in early childhood education, one year of experience in teaching preschool children, and two years of experience in the supervision of a moderate-sized staff.
Associate's degree or higher in a field related to early childhood education plus two years experience in teaching preschool children; and two years experience in the supervision of a moderate-sized staff.
Must be able to bend, stoop and lift 50 pounds. Position(s) in this classification may require typing or other computer software skills.
