Baton Rouge Mississippi River Levee Bicycle PathA 2.5 mile stretch of the levee bike path extends from the end of the downtown promenade just north of the I-10 Mississippi River Bridge to Skip Bertman Drive at LSU. The 15 foot wide path includes separate lanes for bicycles and walkers/joggers as well as lighting, seating and water fountains. The bike path links to the existing one mile riverfront promenade in Downtown Baton Rouge.

Funding was split between Federal, State and Local funds. Gulf Engineers and Consultants of Baton Rouge designed the path under contract to the New Orleans District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, for the City Parish Department of Public Works. The City-Parish owns and maintains the path.

Near the start of the levee path, a trailhead is located under the Mississippi River Bridge, this locations also provides parking. As the path travels southward from the bridge it crosses a section of existing large water intake pipes. The path ramps down from the levee crown, cross the pipes with a bridge, and then ramps back up to the levee top. In the vicinity of W. McKinley St., the path again ramps down this time to the ground surface and cross over 48-inch pipeline running under River Road.

After crossing the pipeline, the path ramps up to the levee top and proceed to Skip Bertman Drive. A handicap accessible ramp leads you down from the top of the levee at Skip Bertman Drive where a levee top trailhead is provided.

Along River Road a drop off/pick-up area is built. Stairs at this point climb up the levee to a scenic overlook plaza with water drinking fountain, flagpoles and seating. Boxed planters accommodate shade trees over the benches. Cattle fencing are provided on LSU Vet School property to separate cattle from pedestrians.
