|Under the direction of a higher classification, performs technical medical work involving the care and treatment of inmates at the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison and responsibility for the supervision of a particular twelve-hour shift. Work involves the delegation of shift duties, the completion of various daily shift reports and inventories; administering routine medical treatment to inmates; and conducts physical assessments on prisoners at the time of arrest. Performs other work as requested.|
|ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS|
|Coordinates shift and provides supervision of Prison Health Care Technicians on an assigned twelve hour shift, ensuring all duties of the shift are performed; completion of various daily shift reports.
Maintains and inventories the emergency stock medication cabinet at the beginning and end of assigned shift; pulls all medications as needed during a shift.
Dispenses medication to entire inmate population; provides routine medical treatment to inmate population.
Draws blood, starts I.V.s, and initiates resuscitative measures.
Performs physical assessments on prisoners at the time of arrest to include but not limited to: primary and secondary assessment, complete medical history, charting of vital signs, and other medical findings; provides and charts all treatment rendered or ordered by physician.
|KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES|
|Knowledge of paraprofessional medical practices and techniques of the basic life support level.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards associated with medical work.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Ability to identify signs and symptoms of medical situations and administer appropriate medical treatment to stabilize the patient's condition.
Ability to supervise and motivate the work of subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written medical instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, medical, and security staff.
Ability to deal firmly and tactfully with people contacted in the course of work.
Ability to obtain a Louisiana Chauffeur's license if necessary.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
|EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE|
|High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, supplemented by completion of a practical nursing course or completion of an Advanced EMT or EMT Paramedic course, and six months of experience in administering medical treatment to inmates.|
|Any equivalent combination of education and experience.|
|Throughout employment in this classification, must possess and maintain a valid license to practice practical or registered nursing in the State of Louisiana, or registration as an Advanced EMT or EMT Paramedic by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, and certification by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, Office of Public Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.
Must have a valid Louisiana driver's license at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment in this classification.

|For security purposes, all applicants/employees of EMS-Prison Medical Services must obtain and maintain security clearance with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office throughout employment in this classification.
