Pest Control Inspector III

EBR Parish Mosquito Abatement and Rodent Control District
Under the direction of an employee of a higher classification, performs responsible supervisory field work in the control and/or eradication of mosquitoes, rodents and associated pests. Work involves responsibility for training and supervising subordinate supervisors and pest control inspectors engaged in locating, identifying and remedying pest related problems within East Baton Rouge Parish. Incumbent plans, assigns and monitors the work of subordinates, as well as performs advanced field work and efficacy testing; initiates program modifications. Work also involves assisting Mosquito Control Specialist in disease surveillance and insecticide resistance- testing. Work is highly independent and is reviewed through periodic conferences or reports and observation of results obtained. Performs other work as requested.
Plans, monitors and evaluates the work of subordinate pest control personnel; performs advanced field work for evaluating efficacy of larviciding. Monitors efficacy of larviciding, adulticiding and rodenticide applications and assists in developing corrective action plans. Assists Mosquito Control Specialist and Entomologist with insecticide resistance tests, droplet trials, and optimization and characterization trials. Assists Entomologist with inspections and enforcement of bee ordinance, pool ordinance and other public health issues. Oversees training and certification of Pest Control Inspectors I and II; develops and implements field training procedures and manuals. Assists Mosquito Control Specialist and Entomologist with Arbovirus surveillance programs and bio control programs.
Knowledge of biology of mosquitoes, rodents and honeybees and the ability to make applications in mosquito and rodent control programs. Knowledge of mosquito and rodent control materials and methods and of advanced sampling techniques. Knowledge of Arbovirus surveillance, wild birds and sentinel chicken surveillance, collection methods and the ability to draw and process blood and serum samples, handle mist nets, light traps, truck mounted traps, oviposition buckets and other collection devices. Ability to train and supervise subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale. Ability to determine the efficiency of pesticides and develop and implement field trials. Ability to follow oral and written instructions and establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public. Ability to do dilutions, mathematical calculations and handle equipment necessary to conduct efficacy trials for pesticides and biopesticides. Ability to keep detailed records and prepare complete reports, charts and graphs. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing to groups and to individuals. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, supplemented by eight semester hours of biology from an accredited college or university, and two years of experience in mosquito and rodent control work or as a Pest Control Inspector.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must have a valid Louisiana driver's license at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment in this classification. Possession of a valid commercial pesticide applicator's certification in categories 8A-Mosquito Control, 8B-Rodent Control and/or 8C-Community Public Health Pest Control may be required for certain positions in this class.
