|LOCATION OF WORK|
|Under the general supervision of an employee of a higher classification, performs routine work in providing assistance to the general public in social service programs. Work involves disseminating information on available social services, providing general assistance in the delivery of social services, packing and serving congregate meals for the elderly and encouraging volunteer participation in social service programs. Employees of this class receive detailed instructions at the beginning of work and on new assignments, but regular and routine assignments may be performed independently; initiative and judgment may be utilized as experience is gained. Performs other work as requested.|
|ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS|
|Informs general public and elderly hospital patients of social services offered by various social service agencies; evaluates eligibility of applicants for social services based on established criteria.
Visits elderly hospital patients to inform the patient or family of the various programs available through East Baton Rouge Council on Aging, keeping records of patients seen and services offered.
Organizes the serving of congregate meals to the elderly by registering participants, checking food temperature, preparing steam tables, packing meals to be delivered, serving meals and cleanup activities.
Calls volunteers to cover routes, makes necessary route changes; delivers meals when volunteers are unavailable.
Provides nutrition education to clients.
Assists clients with referrals to agencies such as legal services, housing authority, food stamps, etc.
Takes LIHEAP or other grant related social services programs.|
|KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES|
|Knowledge of types of social services offered by governmental agencies and of procedures used in obtaining such services.
Knowledge of record keeping procedures used to prepare routine forms and reports.
Knowledge of food service and rules and regulations of the Health Department.
Ability to communicate and establish rapport and interact effectively with volunteers, elderly hospital patients, and the economically disadvantaged.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.|
|EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE|
|High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency. |
|Any equivalent combination of education and experience.|
|Position(s) of this classification may require a valid Louisiana driver's license. If license is required, must maintain throughout employment in this position.|
