Library Board of Control
Under the close supervision of an employee of a higher classification, performs sub-professional to professional library work in nature, increasing in difficulty and responsibility as professional training is completed. Work involves performance of various complex clerical and sub-professional tasks in connection with daily operations of the library system. Employees of this class perform library work of a limited nature, requiring professional training, but limitations decrease as training increases. Incidental supervision may be exercised over sub-professional and clerical employees. Performs other work as requested. Note: Employees within this classification are hired on a part-time basis and paid at an hourly rate.
Performs routine desk duties in general or specialized library circulation, answers telephone and personal inquiries made by patrons; advises patrons on selection of books and resolution of library problems. Answers routine reference questions involving the use of encyclopedias, dictionaries, directories and other basic online and print reference tools. Checks in government documents; sends reference cards to patrons with specific interests; processes interlibrary book loans. Receives, reassembles and returns exhibits from individuals, clubs, and other sources; files pamphlets, cards, pictures and other material. Indexes pamphlets, picture index, local magazines and other materials for vertical files.
Knowledge of books, literature and elementary reference works and resources in print and online. Knowledge of reader interest levels, books and authors. Knowledge of standard library principles, practices and procedures. Knowledge of clerical processes and records used in a library. Ability to use productivity software to create documents, spreadsheets, presentations, databases and other files, as assigned or needed. Ability to use computers to search the library catalog, online databases and the Internet. Ability to learn varied clerical and moderately complex library duties. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public and to deal tactfully and courteously with library patrons. Ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instructions. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
Bachelor's degree and enrollment in courses leading to a graduate degree from an accredited school of library science.
Enrollment during the summer session shall be optional. Three years will be the maximum time limit to obtain the library science degree.
