|Under the direction of a Librarian or a library technician of a higher classification, assists in professional library tasks of copy cataloging, circulation, programming and reference duties. In addition to performing the primary duties of Library Technician I, a Library Technician II has duties including but not limited to supervision of library technicians of a lower classification, library pages, clerical staff and community service workers. A Library Technician II may also work in the Library Business Office performing business office functions. Work is reviewed for adherence to established practices while in progress and upon completion of projects. Performs other work as requested.
Note: Some employees within this classification are hired on a part-time basis and paid at an hourly rate.|
|ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS|
|Assists a section head of a community library in performing and managing reference, circulation, youth services, programming and related activities.
Responsible for opening and closing library on a rotating basis with other library personnel.
Contacts potential exhibitors and schedules displays and exhibits for the branch; makes signs, posters and flyers for these events and facilitates setting up and taking down of exhibits.
Oversees and implements national Pen Pal program throughout system; plans and implements adult programming and helps facilitate system wide programs; may oversee the Summer Reading Program at a community library.
Visits elementary schools, day cares, and pre-schools to present library talks, book talks, and story times.
Supervises, trains, evaluates, and schedules library pages; supervises assigned personnel in the cataloging of books for the library system; assists in training of new staff and delegating workflow to other technicians and pages.
Collects and verifies information for the Parish Attorney, prepares statistical reports and performs select copy cataloging.
Assists a librarian in the process of collection development and management and in weeding, sorting and distributing materials throughout the system.
Assists with workflow of Library Information Services and preparation of Community Services Directory for printing, simple correspondence and calendar of events.|
|KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES|
|Knowledge of books, literature and basic reference works and resources.
Knowledge of reader interest levels, books and authors.
Knowledge of the principals, practices and procedures of standard library work.
Knowledge and skill in an online environment.
Ability to evaluate and interpret information obtained from online searches.
Ability to assist patrons in the use of the Internet, the online catalog, office productivity applications, and proprietary databases.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
Ability to make decisions recognizing established precedents, practices and systems, and to use resourcefulness, tact and courtesy in meeting new problems and in dealing with library patrons.
Ability to use selected multimedia equipment.
Ability to push, lift, bend, and reach as needed for shelving, moving heavy boxes of books, tables for programs, etc.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.|
|EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE|
|Bachelor's degree and two years experience in paraprofessional library work.|
|Equivalent higher education from an accredited school of library and information science may substitute for work experience.|
