Computer Room Supervisor

Information Services Department
Under the direction of a technical or administrative supervisor, performs advanced technical and supervisory work in maintaining optimum efficiency of the computer room operations, including enterprise-class server hardware, software, and peripheral equipment used by multiple City-Parish departments, as well as outside agencies. Work involves planning, organizing, and supervising the monitoring and maintenance of enterprise-class server hardware and software, running batch processes, and printing reports. An employee in this class may be required to work shift work and is subject to unusual working hours, as well as twenty-four hour call for situations needing immediate attention. Performs other work as requested.
Supervises all subordinate computer operators in the operation of enterprise-class server hardware, software, and peripheral equipment. Trains and instructs all subordinate computer operators in the operation of enterprise-class server hardware, software, and peripheral equipment. Assists subordinate computer operators in troubleshooting problems and determines proper course of action to resolve problem. Coordinates and schedules work for all shifts. Monitors the operation of enterprise-class server hardware, software, and peripheral equipment to ensure proper functioning and prevent damage caused by malfunctioning equipment or improper operation techniques. Maintains a log on all equipment breakdowns, and reports the nature of the problems to service representatives. Confers with manufacturers' representatives concerning maintenance service of computer equipment. Orders all supplies needed for efficient computer room operations. Performs backup of servers to tape or disk. Runs all batch reports for City-Parish agencies; separates all printed work and attaches to respective job control. Receives and tracks trouble calls involving server hardware and software; troubleshoots and attempts to correct advanced problems that develop; calls for assistance as necessary to correct the problem. Performs maintenance and minor repairs on server hardware and peripheral equipment. Catalogs, files, and stores backup tapes. Documents system procedures for use by other Information Services personnel. Shreds paper as needed.
Knowledge of the operations and maintenance of server hardware, software, and peripheral equipment and probable causes of malfunctions. Knowledge of personal computer hardware and software, including word processing and email. Skill in the performance of miscellaneous clerical tasks. Skill in the use of a light motor vehicle. Ability to perform advanced operations on server hardware, software, and peripheral equipment, and to make adjustments to the machines. Ability to prepare written work schedules and reports. Ability to lift objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions. Ability to use written, oral, and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with co-workers and non-technical end-users. Ability to be flexible and adaptable to learn and understand new technologies. Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment. Ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented environment. Ability to sit for extended periods. Ability to be highly self-motivated. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to supervise subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, and four years of experience in computer operations.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Availability of and ability to drive a private motor vehicle during working hours.
