|Under the direction of a higher classification, performs responsible advanced technical work in the area of coordination of the Information Services and City-Parish Local Area Network (LAN) and the Wide Area Network (WAN) systems as a staff specialist. Work involves initial evaluation, selection and updating of hardware, evaluation and selection of interfacing software and coordination of services. May serve as lead worker in providing advice or assistance relative to complex networking functions. Incumbents of this class are required to work at various locations throughout the City-Parish. Work involves the use of independent judgment and is reviewed through personal conferences and results obtained. Performs other duties as requested.|
|ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS|
|Reviews and confers with higher classifications and users regarding requests for connectivity; makes recommendations to higher classifications relative to feasibility, cost of implementation, security issues, load balancing, scheduling and prioritization of requests.
Coordinates the use of all network components including hardware and software as well as transports protocols.
Prepares operator instructions and user manuals; installs and evaluates new network related software applications.
Troubleshoots and repairs system/network problems.
Makes recommendations regarding many hardware purchases and some software purchases.
May provide training for user departments in the use of network programs, menus, report writers and other network tools.
Trains lower level employees, reviews their work and provides guidance.|
|KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES|
|Knowledge of structured techniques of network management.
Knowledge of computer hardware and software with specific knowledge of mainframe hardware and software.
Knowledge of computer system network design and analysis.
Ability to stay current with new technological developments relating to computers.
Ability to analyze complex procedures and systems and develop problem solving strategies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.|
|EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE|
|High school diploma, GED, or equivalent certificate of competency and successful completion of a vocational technical school in electronics or networking, supplemented by four years experience in local and wide area network equipment maintenance, large network administration and support, including one year experience in the use of Network Management Software. |
|Any equivalent combination of education and experience.|
