Airport Police/ARFF Officer

Greater Baton Rouge Airport District
Under the direction of a superior or senior officer, performs skilled law enforcement and rescue-fire-fighting work as a member of an assigned shift at the Greater Baton Rouge Airport District. Work involves responsibility for the protection of life and property, prevention of crime, and the enforcement of federal, state and local laws and regulations as they apply to airport law enforcement and aircraft rescue-fire-fighting procedures. Employees of this class are required to learn and participate in the operation of apparatus and in the performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions such as heat, smoke and cramped and hazardous surroundings. A significant portion of time is spent in routine terminal and facilities patrol and inspection of aircraft rescue-fire-fighting property and equipment. Incumbent is on twenty-four hour call. Performs other work as requested.
Provides police patrol; assists other law enforcement agencies; observes screening of passengers; makes arrests for state and local violations; writes arrest and complaint reports; issues parking and traffic citations; answers calls and complaints from airport tenants; completes appropriate reports and forms. Responds to aircraft emergencies providing fire fighting, rescue and first aid to victims; participates in mock air disaster drills; patrols runways, ramps, hangars and other airport facilities to detect security or safety discrepancies; operates rescue-fire-fighting equipment. Maintains rescue-fire-fighting equipment and station by making daily inspections and performing minor preventive maintenance on equipment. Provides traffic control and enforcement during peak periods; controls all public access points to air carrier ramps; secures scene of aircraft accident until Safety Board investigators arrive. Participates in all mandatory training, and acts as shift supervisor when senior officer is on third shift. Conducts daytime bird/wildlife inspection of the airfield.
Knowledge of rescue-fire-fighting equipment, first aid fundamentals and the modern methods and techniques used in aircraft rescue-fire-fighting and structural firefighting. Knowledge of the federal, state and local laws and regulations as they apply to airport safety and law enforcement. Skill in the use and care of firearms. Ability to analyze varied situations and objectively select an appropriate course of action, within established rules and regulations. Ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully and with respect for the rights of others. Ability to drive and effectively operate rescue-fire-fighting vehicles and equipment. Ability to understand and follow complex, oral and written instructions. Ability to perform strenuous work under hazardous conditions with sufficient strength and agility. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, and must not be less than twenty-one (21) years of age.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Employees of this class are required to meet minimum physical standards as set forth by the Louisiana Council on Police Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.), and must successfully complete and pass a certified P.O.S.T. training program approved by the Louisiana Council within one calendar year from the initial employment or employee will be terminated. Passing the P.O.S.T. examination within one calendar year is a requirement of employment, therefore the probationary period will end after the employee has completed six (6) months of employment and passed the P.O.S.T. examination.
For security reasons, as per TSA provision 1542; all applicant/employees of the Greater Baton Rouge Airport District who have access to restricted areas will be required to have a ten (10) year criminal background check to the extent allowable by the law. Employees found to have an excessive criminal record or other misrepresentations of employment will not be eligible for employment.
