Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor

Under direction of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Manager, performs responsible technical and administrative work in supervising the operations and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant. Work involves providing technical supervision and assistance to subordinates. Employees of this class may be on twenty-four hour call. Work is performed with some latitude and independence in decision making within established policies, rules, regulations and guidelines. Work is reviewed through observation, conferences, reports, and for results obtained. Performs other work as requested.
Plans, organizes and supervises the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant. Assists in preparation of the division's operating budget; administers budget; authorizes requisitions and payments. Makes necessary changes in plant operations; carries out plans and procedures to ensure efficient plant operation and that standards relating to wastewater treatment are enforced. Reviews the work of subordinate supervisors and advises them on policies, procedures, practices and problems of an unusual nature. Performs routine inspection of equipment, grounds, facilities and overall condition of the treatment plant. Investigates treatment plant problems; takes or recommends corrective action. Prepares and maintains accurate operating reports. Meets with contractors and attends process control meetings. Schedules the work shifts of operating personnel and responds to emergency calls regarding plant equipment breakdowns. Provides training to subordinate personnel as required.
Knowledge of the materials, methods, practices and equipment used in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant. Knowledge of the theory and practice of modern wastewater treatment operations. Knowledge of the basic principles of chemistry as it pertains to wastewater treatment. Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of electrical, mechanical, chemical filtration's and related plant equipment. Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions for wastewater treatment plant work. Knowledge of the preventive maintenance practices applicable to equipment operated. Knowledge of modern management methods and practices. Skill in interpreting the readings of test gauges and meters used in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant. Ability to organize, supervise and inspect the work of treatment plant supervisors, operators, mechanics and others engaged in wastewater treatment plant operations and maintenance. Ability to maintain and prepare accurate operating reports. Ability to communicate clearly, orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
Bachelor's degree in environmental science, engineering, or a closely related field, and three years of progressively responsible work experience in wastewater treatment plant operation, including six months of supervisory experience.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Possession of a Class IV Wastewater Treatment Certificate as issued by the Louisiana State Department of Health. Position(s) of this classification may require a valid Louisiana driver's license. If license is required, must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
