Pump Mechanic II

Department of Environmental Services
Under the general supervision of an employee of a higher classification, performs supervisory and skilled work in the maintenance, inspection and repair of sewage and storm water pumping and treatment stations. Work involves responsibility for assuring the efficient mechanical operation of equipment, pumps, and related apparatus at sewage and storm water pumping and treatment stations. Work in this class involves responsibility for participation in the more difficult tasks of equipment, maintenance and repair. Technical supervision is provided for employees engaged in the maintenance of equipment and facilities. Work is reviewed through the efficient operation of equipment and facilities. An employee of this class may be on twenty-four hour call. Performs other work as requested.
Plans, organizes, assigns and supervises the work of a small group of skilled maintenance workers engaged in inspecting, operating, maintaining, installing and repairing a variety of storm water and sewage pumping and treatment facilities. Inspects the adequacy of maintenance work and the repair of pumps and allied control equipment at assigned pumping and treatment stations. Participates in routine maintenance, repair, operation and overhaul work. Instructs maintenance workers in their work and in the use of new methods of work and types of equipment. Diagnoses equipment difficulties and assigns maintenance workers to jobs; adjusts work schedules as necessary to suit emergency needs. Requisitions parts and supplies for repairs and operations as needed. Operates and maintains air injection stations and filter systems. Prepares shift roster, assigns work, maintains daily records and submits reports. Uses and maintains various hand and power tools. Operates and maintains light automotive vehicle.
Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of pumps and electrical controls involved in the operation of automatic pumping stations. Knowledge of pipefitting, mechanics and the principles and practices of the electrician trade. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary to safe mechanical and electrical work. Knowledge of the operation of sewage treatment plants. Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of a moderate sized group of skilled workers in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale. Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems. Ability to diagnose operating trouble, and locate and correct trouble in mechanical and electrical equipment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, and two years of journeyman level experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of pumping, and sewage treatment facilities.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Position(s) of this classification may require a valid Louisiana driver's license or a valid Louisiana Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class A, B, or C with appropriate endorsements. If license is required, must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
