| Engineering Aide III | | | | JOB CODE: | 101220 | | | | PAY GRADE: | 1170 | | | | SALARY RANGE: | $31,583 - $43,718 | | | | LOCATION OF WORK | | Department of Public Works | | | | GENERAL DESCRIPTION | | Under the direction of a departmental supervisor, performs highly responsible sub-professional engineering work of a supervisory nature. Work involves assignments as project inspector supervising and coordinating the activities of several public construction work projects. Work also involves responsibility for directing and coordinating the activities of all engineering survey work. Incumbent exercises considerable independent judgment in developing work methods and procedures within the confines of City-Parish regulations and departmental policies. Work is reviewed through inspection, oral and written reports and for results obtained. Performs other work as requested. | | | | ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS | | Supervises and assists in all types of surveys such as land, drainage, sewer and street; locates property and lot lines; summarizes and interprets field notes.
Determines and gives grade elevations to construction crews for excavation of canals, roadside ditches and storm drain culverts.
Works with road lighting districts and annexations.
Inspects construction projects on a continuous basis.
Drives vehicle to and from various site locations.
Supervises the setting of river gauges, benchmarks, etc. | | | | | KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES | | Knowledge of mathematics and trigonometry.
Knowledge of the terminology, methods, practices and techniques of engineering or architectural drafting.
Knowledge of ordinances and regulations relative to City-Parish construction and demolition standards.
Knowledge of engineering maps and records.
Knowledge of materials, methods, and techniques applicable to large public and private street, sewer, utility, drainage and building construction and demolition work.
Skill in the safe operation of a light motor vehicle.
Skill in the operation of modern survey equipment.
Skill in the operation of modern office equipment such as, the telephone, typewriter, calculator, copier, blueprint maker, microfilm reader and printer, computer terminal and related peripherals.
Ability to make complex engineering computations and to interpret field notes and construction plans.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans and specifications applicable to large-scale public works construction.
Ability to investigate and write reports on fundamental engineering problems concerning streets, drainage and sewerage designs.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, contractors, property owners and the public.
Ability to supervise the work of sub-professional engineering and/or clerical personnel.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division. | | | | | MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS | | EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE | | High school diploma, GED, or equivalent certificate of competency, and four years sub-professional engineering/architectural/construction experience (such as drafting, surveying, inspecting, etc.). | | | | SUBSTITUTIONS | | Any equivalent combination of education and experience. | | | | CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES | | Must have a valid Louisiana driver's license at the time of appointment and maintain throughout employment in this classification. | | | | OTHER JOB ASPECTS | | None. | | | | NOTE: | | The work examples described in this specification are intended only as an illustration of the various types of work that may be performed.
