|Under the supervision of an employee of a higher classification, performs skilled work at the journeyman level in the use of acetylene or electric arc welding equipment. Work involves responsibility for performing skilled journeyman level tasks in the maintenance and repair of metal tools, machinery, and equipment by use of acetylene and electric arc welding equipment. The employee of this class exercises complete independent judgment as to methods used. Work assignments are received from a superior, orally or in writing. Work may be checked while in progress as well as upon completion. Performs other work as requested.|
|ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS|
|Preheats and cleans metals; lays out, cuts and fits materials for welding; selects proper welding heat and proper type and size of electrodes for correct penetration and strength of welded metals.
Does cutting and welding on such machinery and equipment as truck and automobile bodies, piping, engine parts, trailer parts, heavy construction equipment, pumps at pumping stations, and similar machinery and apparatus.
Fabricates special machinery and apparatus for general public works purposes.
Does flat, vertical, and horizontal welding; brazes, solders, and coats nonferrous metals; inspects, brushes and grinds welds.
Occasionally drives truck and tows portable welder and acetylene burning-welding equipment to outside construction projects.
Maintains and makes minor repairs to welding equipment.|
|KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES|
|Knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools and materials of the welders trade.
Knowledge of the properties of ferrous and nonferrous metals encountered in welding work.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Skill in the use and care of the tools and equipment common to the welding trade.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to read and work from simple sketches, diagrams and broken parts.
Ability to perform duties requiring physical strength endurance.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.|
|EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE|
|High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, and one year of journeyman level experience in welding work. |
|Any equivalent combination of education and experience.|
|Position(s) of this classification may require a valid Louisiana driver's license. If license is required, must be maintained throughout employment in this position.|
