Various City-Parish Departments
Under the supervision of an employee of a higher classification, performs journeyman carpentry work in both construction and maintenance activities. Work involves performance of skilled carpentry tasks in the construction, alteration, and repair of wooden structures and equipment. Assignments received are usually oral or written, but may be in the form of penciled layouts, rough sketches, or blueprints. Close supervision is exercised over one or more trades workers and other subordinate personnel. Work is performed independently, with considerable latitude for determining materials and work methods used and is subject to inspection during progress and upon completion. Performs other work as requested.
Builds small frame buildings; installs partitions, ceilings, doors, and locks; sets door frames; lays flooring; applies roofing and shingles; and hangs sheet rock. Studies blueprints and sketches, and/or visits the job site to determine the quantity and cost of materials needed to complete a job. Make cabinets, counters, bookcases, desks, screen doors, window sashes, bulletin boards, moldings, and other wooden articles. Make replacement pieces for the repair of furniture, restores antique furniture, repairs stairways, replaces siding, adjusts and repairs doors, and cuts holes for duct work and ventilators. Performs skilled bench work operating power saws, planers, and other standard carpentry and cabinet-making tools, and power-driven woodworking equipment. Assigns and reviews work of trades workers and laborers; trains special project enrollees in fundamentals of carpentry. Frequently perform as liaison between City-Parish and contractor, architect, engineer. Attend pre-bid conferences.
Knowledge of the standard practices, materials, and tools of the carpentry trade. Knowledge of City-Parish building codes governing building construction, repair, and alteration. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Skill in the use and operation of carpenter tools and machines. Ability to read, interpret, and work from sketches and blueprints. Ability to direct the work activities of an assistant on-site. Ability to perform duties requiring physical strength and endurance. Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with coworkers, superiors, and others. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, and successful completion of an apprenticeship or equivalent training program in the carpentry field.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Position(s) of this classification may require a valid Louisiana driver's license. If license is required, must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
