Building Maintenance Plumber

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the general supervision of a Mechanical Operations Supervisor or other superior, performs journeyman level plumbing work in construction and maintenance activities. Incumbents may perform skilled tasks in the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing and heating systems, fittings, and accessories. Close supervision is exercised over trades workers and laborers. Performs other work as requested.
 
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Installs water, low pressure steam, sewer, and gas systems; installs plumbing fixtures, specialized kitchen, laundry, and laboratory equipment. Bends, cuts, reams, and threads pipe; makes lead joints; sweats fittings on copper pipe; taps water and gas mains; greases and packs expansion joints on steam lines. Maintains piping systems by opening clogged pipes and traps; tests for leaks by filling pipe with water under pressure and checking with a gauge for full pressure. Makes layouts and sketches of plumbing to be installed; prepares estimates of materials, trade, and labor necessary to complete the job. Repairs condensate and circulating pumps, sump pumps, steam traps, air control and pressure regulating valves, and pneumatic temperature controls; replaces thermocouples, safety valves, and boiler tubes. Ensures that shop equipment is maintained in a clean and good state of repair. Assigns and reviews work of trades workers and laborers.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the standard practices, tools, and materials of the plumbing trade. Knowledge of City-Parish plumbing codes governing plumbing installation, repairs, and alterations. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Skill in the use of the tools, materials, and equipment used in the plumbing trade. Ability to make accurate estimates of time and materials. Ability to read, interpret, and work from sketches, blueprints, and specifications and to prepare rough working sketches. Ability to perform duties requiring physical strength and endurance. Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with coworkers, superiors, and others. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent certificate of competency, and successful completion of an apprenticeship or equivalent training program in the plumbing field.
 
SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
Possession of a Journeyman Plumber License from the State Plumbing Board of Louisiana. Position(s) of this classification may require a valid Louisiana driver's license. If license is required, must maintain throughout employment in this position.
