Traffic Signal Trainee
Work Location:Department of Transportation & Drainage
Starting Salary:10.0284 Hourly / $20,859 Annual
Pay Grade:1080
Under the direction of an employee of a higher classification, performs work at the beginning training level in the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals and traffic signal control systems. Work involves structured training in installing and repairing solid state, electronic, electrical, and mechanical defects in traffic signal systems. Assignments are given orally or in writing with sketches/blueprints. An employee of this class may be on twenty-four-hour call. Performs other work as requested.
Assists with installing and repairing solid state, electronic, electrical, and mechanical defects in traffic signal systems. Assists with making field repairs to solid state, electronic, electromechanical, and digital controllers and lights. Assists with repairing electrical motors, lights, lamps, ballasts, circuits, fixtures, lenses, reflectors, illuminated overhead signs, and traffic signal heads. Assists with installing traffic signal pole foundations, traffic signal poles, overhead span wire, and traffic control signs. Assists with cutting and splicing cable, running conduit, and installing new cable above and below ground. Assists with maintaining records, parts inventory, and equipment information. Attends training schools as required. Operates variety of motorized construction equipment used in the installation and maintenance of traffic signal systems.
Knowledge of principles and practices of the solid state, electronic, and electrical trades. Skill in the use of electrical and electronic equipment. Ability to receive training from a technical supervisor. Ability to learn how to install, maintain, and repair traffic signals and traffic signal control systems. Ability to learn the occupational hazards and safety precautions of working with traffic signal systems. Ability to understand and follow written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
High school diploma, GED, HISET, or equivalent certificate of competency, and six months of experience in electrical or electronic work.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must have a valid Louisiana driver's license at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment in this classification.
