Under the close supervision of an employee of a higher classification, performs manual work in the custodial care of public buildings and related facilities. Work involves varied cleaning tasks following established routines in an assigned building or building area. Primary responsibility is for cleaning and otherwise caring for buildings and equipment. Employees may be required to work unusual working hours and in more than one location. Work is reviewed through observation on the job. Performs other work as requested.
Sweeps and mops floors; dusts and cleans offices, or other work areas; strips, waxes, and polishes floors; polishes furniture; collects and removes trash; washes walls and windows. Cleans restrooms and replenishes supplies; unstops sinks and toilets and reports the need for repairs. Performs minor cleaning of upholstery and drapes; vacuums and shampoos carpets. Sweeps sidewalks, pick up litter and maintains walks and lawns around assigned buildings. Replaces light bulbs; repairs door locks; replaces window glass; makes basic repairs to furniture. Keeps custodial materials and equipment clean and in order.
Knowledge of cleaning materials, equipment, methods and practices used in cleaning operations. Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of vacuum cleaners, scrubbing machines, polishing machines and other custodial equipment. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary when using cleaning chemicals and equipment. Ability to make minor repairs on building fixtures and equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability and physical strength necessary to work long hours at custodial tasks. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the public. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
Ability to read and write, and one year of experience in custodial work involving the use of commercial cleaning materials and equipment.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Custodian Series exam required. (may take up to 1 1/2 hours from test start time). Subject areas and other exam preparation information are available at Written examinations are available on most Tuesdays, 8:30 9:00 am, check-in, Thursdays, *12:00 - 12:30 pm, and Fridays, (for current openings only) 8:30 9:00 am check-in. Please call Human Resources Recruiting and Examination at 389-3132 to confirm testing dates and times. Test check-in is on a first come-first served basis. There are occasions where the test room is filled to capacity and applicants are asked to return on another day for testing. Picture identification, proof of social security number and a completed employment application are required for test room admittance. *Where written exam volume is expected to be high, check-in of applicants may begin as early as 11:30 am in order to complete the check-in process prior to the required 12:30 cut-off time.
