I Received a Ticket

Though not a pleasant experience, the issuance of tickets is a necessary step in enforcement efforts to reduce traffic accidents, deaths and injuries. Most drivers recognize they are driving illegally when stopped. However, no one enjoys receiving a ticket, and when it happens the recipient may be inclined to harbor resentment toward the officer who issued the ticket. It is important to remember that the officer is just doing his job, and may be saving a life.

When you disobey traffic laws you endanger yourself as well as other motorists, passengers and pedestrians. It is the duty of our peace officers to observe traffic infractions and issue tickets to those driving illegally, no matter how unpopular this action may be. We hope this ticket encourages you to drive responsibly.

Ticket Violations

If you received a ticket for one of the following violations, your fine is $117. for each violation.

• Careless driving
• Improper backing
• Disobeying Police Officer
• Improper lane usage
• Failure to maintain control
• Improper passing on the left
• Failure to signal
• Improper passing on the right
• Failure to yield
• Improper turns
• Following emergency vehicles
• Motorcyclist and unsafe operation
• Following too close
• Speeding 1-30 mph over limit
• Headlights required/failure to dim
• Violating traffic signals or signals

If you received a ticket for one of the following violations, your fine is $97. for each violation.

• Expired inspection sticker
• Expired license plate
• Improper equipment
• Permitting unlicensed person to drive
• Registration violation
• Unnecessary noise/loud music

If you received a ticket for one of the following violations and if you provide current proof or proof of correcting the violation(s), your fine is $97. for each violation. If you do not correct the violation(s), you must come to court on your court appearance date.

• Expired driver’s license
• Expired Insurance*
• No driver’s license on person
• No insurance*
• Failure to change address on driver’s license
• No proof of insurance*

In addition to complying with the requirements indicated above relative to insurance violations, if you received a Compulsory Violation Notice, you must also contact the Louisiana Department of Public Safety at (225) 922-2807. 

Fine Exceptions

If you are charged with any of the violations listed below, your fine and court costs are as indicated.

To avoid waiting in line, pay by mail when possible. $65. Fee For NSF Checks. 5% Fee Added to Credit Card Payments

No Cash or Temporary Checks Accepted. Include ticket number, driver's license number or your ticket with payment. On or before your Court Appearance Date, make a check or money order PAYABLE to the City of Baton Rouge or to pay by mail with credit card, provide the following information.

To Contest Your Ticket

If payment is not made prior to the Court Appearance Date, a not guilty plea is assumed, and you must appear at Baton Rouge City Court, Room 145 at 8:30 a.m. on your court appearance date. Except for violations listed in Section A and B below, and a Moving Violation involving an accident, the officer will be present in court and you will have your trial at that time. If you wish to have witness(es) subpoenaed to be present at trial, you must furnish names and addresses in writing to Baton Rouge City Court, P. O. Box 3438, Baton Rouge, LA 70821-3438 at least 15 days prior to your trial date.

If you are charged with any of the violations listed in Sections A or B below, you must appear in court on your court appearance date at 8:30 a.m., Room 128 for the purpose of entering a plea.

If you plead not guilty to a violation listed in Section A, the Court will set a date for you to return for trial.

If you plead not guilty to a violation listed in Section B, you will have your trial at that time.

Other Information

All persons and property entering the City Court building are subject to inspection by security personnel, including metal detector, X-ray of personal items, visual and physical inspections. Weapons are prohibited.

Auxiliary aides/services are available upon request.

Proper attire is required. No tank tops, muscle shirts, cutoffs, or shorts.

Failure to appear or to pay timely will result in the issuance of a warrant for your arrest, withdrawal of your driving privileges and the assessment of additional penalty fees.

Your parking or traffic ticket can be paid online through our Online Ticket Payment Center. Your ticket can also be paid through our automated phone payment system, from a touchtone phone, by dialing (225) 344-4636, and entering extension 5050. Only Visa, MasterCard and American Express are accepted through these two systems. A 5% convenience fee is added to all credit card payments.
