Office of Neighborhoods
Neighborhood Issues

The Office of Neighborhoods functions as the voice of neighborhoods within City-Parish government. Office of Neighborhoods communicates with neighborhood and civic associations, leads dialogues about the problems they face, and works together with the rest of City-Parish government to find solutions. Listed below are some of the “hot” issues that East Baton Rouge Parish neighborhoods are facing and tips for addressing them.

VIOLATIONS OF THE A-1 RESIDENTIAL HOUSING ORDINANCE

Residential housing areas that are zoned A-1 are designed for single family residences. Homes with more than two unrelated people living in them without the owner living there as well are in violation of City-Parish law. CAN DO!, the former Office of Neighborhoods in East Baton Rouge Parish, had participated in a town meeting about this issue and had answered all the questions that were raised there. Those answers are listed below. To report a violation of this ordinance in your neighborhood, call Neal Bezet of Permit and Inspections Division of the Department of Public Works at 389-8680.

For other types of complaints, service requests and general information call the 3-1-1 Call Center by dialing 3-1-1 or 389-3090. The 3-1-1 Call Center is open 5 days a week from 7:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. to receive citizen inquiries about available parish government services. A call center representative will assist you in finding the appropriate government services, a service request is created and automatically forwarded to the appropriate division to address your needs.

Citizens may also submit a complaint or service request online by accessing BRGov's "Request for Service"

The 3-1-1 Call Center Services Include: general information (hours and location); domestic animal concerns (stray/loose dogs and cats); housing conditions (overgrown lots, junk or inoperative vehicles); mosquito related problems; potholes; traffic signal malfunctions (street sign and traffic light related concerns); sidewalk concerns (damaged or in need of repair), trash & debris pick up; tree/branch hazards; unpermitted construction and zoning violations.
