The Baton Rouge Area Mutual Aid System is proud to host the 18th Annual BRAMAS Hazardous Materials/WMD School. The FREE training is offered to emergency responders, planners, and managers working within Government or Private Industry. The school will be held Tuesday, August 26th through Thursday, 28th at the Baton Rouge River Center.

These classes, taught by experts in the field, provide training to public and private emergency response personnel on a wide variety of topics ranging from tank trucks & railcars, to Weapons of Mass Destruction, to Air Monitoring, Scene Access & Decontamination. All local, state, federal, medical, and industrial emergency response personnel are invited to participate in the courses. These sessions give responders the opportunity to exchange ideas and receive quality 16-hour instruction on hazardous materials response. There is no charge for attendance.

List of Classes

I.  Chemistry of Hazardous Materials Part 1

This 2 hour class will overview basic chemical properties and principals that can be used to assist responders in performing risk assessments and help predict expected hazards of released chemicals. It will focus on information available to responders on material safety data sheets. Instructor: TO BE ANNOUNCED

II.  Chemistry of Hazardous Materials Part 2

 

This 2 hour class will continue on with information covered in Part 1 and add basic information on; Salts, Non-Salts, Hydrocarbons, and Hydrocarbon derivatives. Instructor: TO BE ANNOUNCED

III.  Haz Mat Medical Emergencies

 

This 4 hour class details the management of patients injured during chemical emergencies. Discussions will cover pre hospital care, transportation and arrival at hospital emergency rooms. Instructors: Joe Wilson, BRFD, Blance Blankston, EMS, Jessica Perret, OLOL

IV.  Explosives/Bomb Threat Response

 

This 4 hour class will cover bomb threat procedures for industry and public safety, discussions on bombs and how they function, explosives in general, and a brief overview of domestic terrorism, bomb threats and how to prepare for them. Instructors: Sgt. Chris Rushing, Baton Rouge Police Department and Lt. Robert Stone, EBR Sheriff’s Office

V.  Rail Car/TRANSCAER

 

This 4 hour class covers identification of rail cars, preparation and response to possible HazMat transportation incidents and safety when working around rail cars. Instructor: TO BE ANNOUNCED

VI.  Tank Truck (Response/Safety)

 

This 2 hour class will cover tank truck construction, types and uses of tank trucks. A tank truck will be used for demonstration purposes to describe emergency equipment and procedures. Instructor: Mr. Joe Shows, Trimac

VII.  Clandestine Drug Labs

 

This 2 hour class will overview clandestine drug labs and the hazards they present to emergency responders. Instructor: TO BE ANNOUNCED

VIII.  River Bend Emergencies

 

This 4 hour class will overview preparedness procedures for emergencies involving the River Bend Nuclear Power Facility. Instructor: John Standridge

IX.  Decontamination

 

This 2 hour class will overview the proper procedures to perform decontamination of responders that are utilizing PPE and leaving the Hot Zone. Instructor: ExxonMobil Chemnet Team

X.  Plugging and Patching Equipment

 

This 4 hour class will overview the use of various plugging and patching kits. Including a hands on session with the Chlorine A, B, & C Kits, Midland Kit, and Edwards and Cromwell Kits.  Instructor: Obie Cambre-ExxonMobil, Pete Decoteau-ExxonMobil, Pat Johnson- Edwards & Cromwell, Jack Barber-Honeywell

XI.  Law Enforcement Preparedness and Response Activities

 

This 4 hour class will focus on activities within the Law Enforcement community that are ongoing for the prevention and detection of terrorist incidents. Instructor: TO BE ANNOUNCED

XII.  Air Monitoring Introduction

 

This 2 hour class will discuss the details of using instruments to help responders establish hazard zones by determining concentrations of products that primarily present fire and toxic hazards such as; Combustible Gas Instruments, Electrochemical Sensors and Colorimetric tubes.Instructor: TO BE ANNOUNCED

XIII.  Air Monitoring Advanced

 

This 2 hour class will discuss the details of advanced monitoring instruments that are capable of determining the concentrations of many different chemicals and in some cases determining the identity of the released product. Instruments discussed will include: PID’s, FID’s, GC’s, FTIR, Raman and others. Instructor: TO BE ANNOUNCED

Courses Rotate Each Day:

All participants are expected to attend the General Assemblies on Tuesday morning and Thursday afternoon and each class rotation to receive certificate.

Participants will break into their respective classes starting Tuesday afternoon.  Classes run according to the following schedule:
