| Pump Mechanic I | | | | Work Location: | Department of Public Works | | | | Starting Salary: | 12.4919 Hourly / $25,983 Annual | | | | Pay Grade: | 1130 | | | | Special Recruiting Rate: | | This classification has a special recruiting rate of step 6 starting salary ($14.48hourly) for new hires only. | | | | GENERAL DESCRIPTION | | Under the general supervision of an employee of a higher classification, performs skilled work in the maintenance, inspection and repair of sewage and storm water pumping and treatment stations. Work involves the responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of all pumps, electrical, and mechanical equipment at various sewage and storm water pumping and treatment facilities. Work is performed in accordance with a schedule, with special assignments received through daily inspections, or reports from supervisors. Assigned facilities are checked periodically for adherence to prescribed standards and for proper operational conditions. May train or supervise employees of a lower level classification. An employee of this class may be on 24-hour call. Performs other work as requested. | | | | ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS | | Inspects and rebuilds pumps, motors, blowers, compressors, drive shafts, and other auxiliary equipment.
Inspects assigned pumping stations, treatment facilities, and controls for proper operating condition.
Replaces defective fuses, wiring, starters, elements and coils; oils blowers and lubricates bearing, pumps and motors; repacks valves and pumps; replaces defective valves, motors, pumps and controls.
Cleans and reinstalls float control systems; cleans and paints pumping stations, treatment plants and buildings.
Repairs broken water lines; unstops sewer pumps.
Works with several maintenance workers in doing major repair, maintenance, and installation work.
Uses and maintains various hand and power tools.
Maintains and submits daily reports.
Operates and maintains light automotive vehicle. | | | | | KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES | | Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of pumps and electrical controls involved in the operation of automatic pumping stations.
Knowledge of pipe fitting and elementary mechanics.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary for safe mechanical and electrical work.
Knowledge of chemistry and hydraulics as applied to the operation of sewage treatment plants and pumping stations.
Knowledge of electricity and the standard practices of the electrician trade.
Skill in the use of tools and equipment of the mechanical trade.
Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division. | | | | | MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS | | EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE | | High school diploma, GED, or equivalent certificate of competency, and one year journeyman level experience in mechanical or electrical work affording a familiarity with automatic pumps. | | | | SUBSTITUTIONS | | Any equivalent combination of education and experience. | | | | CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES | | Position(s) of this classification may require a valid Louisiana driver's license or a valid Louisiana Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class A, B, or C with appropriate endorsements. Written examinations are available on most Tuesdays, 8:00 -8:30 am, check-in, Thursdays, *12:00 - 12:30 pm, and Fridays, (for current openings only) 8:00 -8:30 am check-in. There are occasions where the test room is filled to capacity and applicants are asked to return on another day for testing.
